The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, who has passed away at the age of 57 after a brief illness.

His family announced the somber news on his official Instagram page early Friday morning, expressing gratitude to fans and well-wishers worldwide:

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”

Francis Duru: Life and legacy

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed his early education before relocating to Nigeria for his university studies.

He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996.

His career in Nollywood spanned over three decades:

After making his debut in 1989’s Missing Mark, Duru shot to national fame in 1995 playing Ahanna in the classic action-comedy Rattlesnake, produced by the late Amaka Igwe.

Known for his versatility and powerful performances, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the 2000 Best of Nollywood Awards for Mboputa. He was also recognised as a United Nations ambassador of peace for his positive influence on young people.

Recent health and personal challenges

Duru’s passing follows public concern earlier this year. In June, a circulating video of the actor looking frail sparked rumors regarding his health, which Duru swiftly dismissed as “fabricated and malicious.”

On the home front, the actor married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and the couple shared four children. The family previously suffered a profound personal tragedy with the loss of their son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.
