An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Rotimi Richard Ajayi, has been taken into custody following the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old security guard, Ayineka Ayomide Daniel, at TSL Halogen Company in Itori, Ogun State.

The tragic incident, which occurred on October 14, also left another security guard with severe gunshot wounds to both hands.

The survivor is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The case has since been transferred from the Itori Police Station to the Ogun State Police Headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, where the suspect is being held as investigations proceed.

Conflicting accounts

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain heavily disputed by company representatives and the grieving family:

The Company’s Account: A staff member identified as Abayomi claimed the tragedy stemmed from an accidental discharge while responding to a suspected security breach. According to Abayomi, the deceased guard was the one who went to alert the deployed officer about a potential intruder, and the shooting occurred during their collective response. He noted that the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2 has ordered a comprehensive investigation.

The Family’s Account: In stark contrast, the victim’s father, Ayineka Oluwashola, alleged that the officer opened fire out of anger after being woken up by the guards. He stated that the family was initially misled into believing his son had been injured in a fight with a friend before discovering the truth.

“They had to go and wake the MOPOL that was asleep already. Immediately they woke the MOPOL; they said he began shooting them. He shot my son in the neck; the other guy, he shot him in his two hands,” Oluwashola recounted.

Oluwashola added that although the family submitted a formal statement at the Eleweran Police Headquarters demanding justice, they were denied access to the detained officer.

Due to rapid decomposition, the family ultimately buried Daniel without performing an autopsy.
