Hospital worker arrested in Ekiti for brutal machete murder of his 42-year-old lover

An environmental staff member at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, has been arrested by the Ekiti State Police Command in connection with the brutal machete murder of his 42-year-old lover, Olaitan Amere.
The suspect, 38-year-old Ismail Tunji Ibiyeye, was taken into custody following an intensive police investigation into the death of Olaitan Amere, a prominent local trader and mother of three.
The gruesome killing occurred at the victim’s residence in the Ajegunle area of Ido-Ekiti, sending shockwaves through the community.
New details emerging from the investigation reveal a calculated and relentless plot against the trader’s life.
According to heartbroken relatives, the fatal machete assault was actually the second attack on Amere within a 24-hour window.
The day before her murder, an arson attempt was made on her home when an unknown individual set a room ablaze.
A vigilant passerby noticed heavy flames pouring from a window and raised an alarm, allowing neighbours to extinguish the fire and save the mother of three.
Undeterred by the failed attempt, the assailant returned the following evening on June 13, 2026, launching a savage machete attack that left Amere with catastrophic injuries.
In an apparent bid to erase forensic evidence, the attacker staged a horrific cover-up after the killing.
Relatives disclosed that the assailant piled clothes and various household items on top of Amere’s lifeless body and attempted to incinerate it.
Detectives processing the scene recovered a plastic container filled with petrol, which had been abandoned right next to the victim’s remains.
The crime came to light after worried family members tried repeatedly to reach Amere on her mobile phone. When her line went unanswered, they tracked the device to her apartment, where they made the gruesome discovery.
Prior to the fatal incident, Amere had reportedly complained to her inner circle about receiving a series of anonymous threats.
While police sources confirm that Ibiyeye was romantically involved with the deceased and has already given a formal statement to investigators, authorities have maintained that full investigations are still underway.
The Ekiti State Police Command emphasised that while the federal hospital worker remains the primary suspect in custody, he has not yet been formally tried or found guilty by a court of law.
