A young Nigerian woman identified simply as Ngufan, who was reportedly trafficked to Mali, has died under circumstances that are yet to be determined, sparking renewed concerns over the growing menace of human trafficking involving vulnerable young women from Nigeria.

The sad development was made public by anti-human trafficking campaigner Zege’Orkwande Sughnen Yaaya in a social media post on Sunday, June 21, 2026.

The activist, known for his efforts in rescuing trafficked girls from Benue State and other parts of Nigeria, disclosed that the victim passed away in Mali. However, the exact cause and circumstances surrounding her death remain unknown.

According to him, ongoing efforts are being made to obtain further details regarding the incident and establish contact with the deceased’s relatives.

In his appeal, the activist urged members of the public who may know Ngufan or have information about her family to come forward so that her next of kin can be informed of the tragic development.

“Please, if you know this girl or any of her family members, kindly reach out so that they can be contacted,” he appealed.

The incident has once again highlighted the dangers faced by many Nigerian girls who are trafficked across West Africa under the guise of employment opportunities.

Human trafficking networks often lure victims with promises of lucrative jobs abroad, only for them to end up in exploitative situations, including forced labour and commercial sexual exploitation.

Recent reports by anti-trafficking organisations and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons indicate that several Nigerian girls have been rescued from Mali, Burkina Faso and other West African countries after being deceived by traffickers who promised them better economic opportunities.

Many survivors have recounted experiences of abuse, coercion and harsh living conditions.

Human trafficking remains a major challenge in Nigeria, with authorities and civil society groups intensifying efforts to dismantle trafficking syndicates operating across borders.

Security agencies have repeatedly warned young people and their families to be wary of offers of overseas employment that appear too good to be true.
