Popular gospel singer Yinka Alaseyori has apologised for the intense reactions greeting her comments that President Bola Tinubu should not be blamed for the spate of kidnapping happening in the country.
In a fresh video shared online, Alaseyori explained that the clip circulating on social media represented only a small portion of a much longer prayer session she had conducted for kidnapped children, their families, security agencies, government officials, and other Nigerians facing difficult circumstances.
According to the singer, the original recording lasted about one hour and 30 minutes, but only a brief segment was extracted and widely shared, leading some people to misunderstand her intentions.
She acknowledged that the shortened clip may have left some viewers feeling ignored or offended and expressed regret over the reaction it generated.
“Please forgive me if I ever made you feel offended, unseen, or if I spoke in a way that seemed insensitive,” she said in the video.
Alaseyori stressed that she would never deliberately make anyone feel unheard or overlooked, adding that her prayers and concerns extended to all those affected by insecurity and hardship.
The apology comes after social media went ablaze after her initial comments went viral. Many Nigerians opined that her comments did not adequately reflect the pain experienced by victims and their families.
Some Nigerians went as far as recording themselves issuing curses on the singer for allegedly siding with the government instead of the victims.
The intensity of the attacks forced her to make a volte face and issue a contrite apology video today.
Following her clarification and apology, reactions online remained mixed.
While some users accepted her apology and praised her willingness to address the controversy, others maintained that public figures should exercise greater caution when discussing sensitive issues such as kidnapping and insecurity.
The incident highlights how shortened social media clips can sometimes generate controversy when removed from their full context, particularly on emotionally charged national issues.
