A driver has been taken into custody following a fatal road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge, which resulted in the death of a woman.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the crash occurred at the Ilaje inward Iyana Oworo axis of the bridge and involved two Toyota Sienna vehicles with registration numbers LSR 809 GV and LSR 695 HM.
Taofiq attributed the accident to reckless driving and excessive speeding, noting that the result was a severe head-on collision.
LASTMA officials on patrol reportedly responded swiftly, managing traffic to prevent further disruption and secondary incidents.
The crash claimed the life of an adult woman, while her 30-year-old daughter, who was in the same vehicle, survived the incident.
Emergency responders evacuated the deceased from the scene.
Authorities disclosed that one of the drivers fled immediately after the crash, while the second driver was apprehended by LASTMA operatives and handed over to the police.
The arrested driver is currently undergoing investigation and may face prosecution.
Reacting to the development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, cautioned motorists against reckless driving and urged strict compliance with speed regulations.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to ensuring road safety and maintaining orderly traffic flow across Lagos State.
In a related development, the Federal Road Safety Corps had earlier reported another fatal accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway involving a car and a motorcycle, which resulted in three deaths.
