“We will not bring subsidy back” – Oyedele speaks amidst rising living costs

Nigeria’s Federal Government has firmly ruled out the return of fuel subsidy, insisting that the policy will not be reinstated under any circumstances.

The position was restated by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, who said the government remains committed to market-driven reforms and will not revert to subsidy or introduce price controls.

Speaking during a meeting with international investors in Paris, Oyedele maintained that subsidy systems distort the economy and create long-term financial instability.

He stressed that Nigeria’s current direction is to allow market forces to determine pricing while strengthening regulation to prevent exploitation.

According to him, the administration’s focus is not on reversing reforms but on ensuring that the benefits of subsidy removal are properly managed through improved revenue use, inflation control measures, and supply-side interventions.

The statement reinforces earlier policy signals from the government that the removal of fuel subsidy is permanent, despite public concerns over rising transport and living costs following its elimination.

The minister also argued that price control mechanisms would undermine economic efficiency, adding that Nigeria is instead working toward a more transparent and competitive economic environment.

Economic analysts note that the government’s stance continues to spark debate among citizens, especially as households and businesses adjust to higher fuel and transportation costs since the subsidy removal.

However, officials insist the long-term goal is economic stability, even if the transition period remains challenging.
