Beware of those smooth-talking strikers at Dubai Airport

By John Awe

‘Do you want to see Dubai free of charge? If you have some time to spare, we can take you around the city on a tour bus free of charge. All you have to do is visit our company in town to listen to a seminar’.

That is an offer you will find irresistible if you love adventure and you have some time to spare upon landing in Dubai, the city of glitz and glamour.

There is not a shortage of smartly dressed men and women who will make you this offer at Dubai International Airport once you clear passport control and head for the exit.

They are deployed at the airport by many companies with the sole aim of striking conversations with travellers and convincing them to pay the companies a visit before they leave Dubai. Think of them as the strikers in soccer. They are the forward-playing members of a team of ‘professionals’ whose ultimate goal is to have a slice of your net worth.

The strikers are energetic and creative. Their role is to bring you in. Other members of the team will take it from there.

Dubai Airport strikers are not so versatile in the use of the English language, but they understand and speak enough to communicate. Some of them are quite glib. They are on the payroll of all manner of companies including tour operators, property developers and so on. Their job is to get some of the millions of travellers who use this airport to visit their companies in town for business.

Seriously, you should not pay them any attention. They are time wasters. Whatever promise they make to you at the airport has no value once you land in their offices. You will almost certainly be disappointed.

The freebies they promise always have a catch that will not enable you to take advantage of them while your visit lasts.

More seriously, some of them work for advanced fee fraud syndicates. They will try to convince you to invest in some hotel property deal that is guaranteed to yield you thousands of dollars in profit after you must have recouped your investment in a couple of years.

Hello! It is a scam. I repeat it is a scam. If you have already collected their flyers at the time you are reading this or you are waiting for their pick-up car driver to ring your hotel room, abort mission!

There is no free lunch in Dubai. Plus, there is a good chance of losing your hard-earned money to smooth-talking marketers.
