An overwhelming number of Nigerians are calling for a probe into the case of a woman who was prevented from sitting for her exam at the National Open University (NOUN) in Garki, Abuja because her dressing was “improper”.

The student, identified as Cassandra, said she arrived at the examination centre in the morning and was getting ready for her 2 p.m. paper when she was denied entrance into the exam hall.

A video captured a security guard holding her back from entering the hall.

Cassandra then showed herself to the camera and asked viewers to tell her if she was indecently dressed.

She was wearing a white tank top, a blue denim jacket, and black jeans. No part of her body was exposed.

“I’m on school premises. I have not gone home. I’m going to show you people what I’m putting on. If this is improper, you people should tell me and if it is not improper, you people should help me share this video to get to whoever owns the school.

“This is because what they are doing to us now, some people cannot actually come out to say it but I will come out to say it because I know my rights. That is why I’m here.”

In the viral video, a school security guard is seen dragging Cassandra away from the entrance of the said examination hall, saying, “They said you should go out”, and when she asked, “What is my offence? Why am I being thrown out? I have an exam by 2:00,” the said invigilator wore a white shirt and black trousers said, “Don’t you know what you wear?”

Cassandra asked, “What am I wearing? Which part of my body is showing?”

Reacting netizens opined that Cassandra was properly dressed and did not deserve to be prevented from writing her exam.

Some suggested that there might be other undisclosed reasons and the authorities needed to probe the case to unearth these.

However, a lady who claimed to be a student of NOUN, but a different centre said the lady infringed the code forbidding crazy jeans on campus.

Read some of the comments:

Ebenz: “I watched this video severally and didn’t find anything indecent about her dress. This is just sheer harassment and looks like a personal vendetta from the lecturer. Investigations should be made and disciplinary (actions) should be taken if found guilty.

Hope this helps”

  1. Lecturer ke? I doubt if the man who accused her of indecent dressing is a lecturer. maybe one of the non-teaching staff at the centre that is not even qualified to invigilate. The centre coordinators who are supposed to be knowledgeable about the whole thing and put those unqualified staff where they belong are most times nowhere to be found at most of the centres. They are too big to see to the smooth conduct of examinations at their centres. Professors at most of the conventional universities will be on the ground to supervise and even invigilate examinations, not so with the big centre coordinators. Or are their tasks just to attend meetings and collect salaries they don’t work for? NOUN needs complete overhauling to prevent it from going into extinction now that we have private open universities.
