Tragedy in Ajegunle: Trigger-happy police officer shoots 2 girls, 1 dead

An Assistant Superintendent of Police, Omotayo Olajide, has been detained by the Lagos State Police Command after discharging his firearm during an operation in the Ajegunle area, killing a young girl and critically injuring another.
The incident occurred on Thursday night, November 5, 2026, along Nosamu Street in Ajegunle, after police officers were deployed to quell a violent clash between two rival street groups, the “Nosamu Boys” and “Alayabiagba Boys,” who were fighting over illegal toll collections with cutlasses and dangerous weapons.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, ASP Olajide fired his gun during the intervention, with the bullets striking two young girls who were in the vicinity.
Both victims were rushed to Ajeromi General Hospital. One of the girls, identified as Omole Taiwo, was later transferred to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja, where she succumbed to her injuries. The second girl remains hospitalised in stable condition.
Following the shooting, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Tijani Fatai, visited the bereaved family on Saturday to extend his condolences. He confirmed that ASP Olajide has been disarmed and remanded in custody.
“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough inquiry to establish what transpired and ensure appropriate legal and disciplinary actions are taken. No officer found culpable will be shielded,” CP Fatai assured.
The fatal shooting echoes a similar tragic incident in Ajegunle in April 2019, when 20-year-old Ada Ifeanyi was killed by police bullets, leading to the dismissal of the officer involved.
