Fashion entrepreneur Evelyn Onyema, founder and Chief Executive Officer of the popular brand 44 Clothing, has returned home safely after being reported missing in Lagos for two days.
Human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu, who originally raised public awareness regarding her disappearance, confirmed her safe return on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Gwamnishu verified her safety through a video call with her family.
Onyema was reported missing after being last seen on October 19 in the Bonny Camp area of Lagos State alongside her boyfriend, identified as Dertrick.
Concern grew rapidly after her personal mobile phones were found abandoned near the location, prompting search efforts across the area.
Activist debunks viral footage of floating body
The search generated significant social media attention on Wednesday when video footage surfaced online depicting a female body floating in a Lagos waterway near Bonny Camp.
The clip sparked widespread speculation that the deceased was the missing designer.
Addressing the viral claims, Gwamnishu hired professional divers and boat operators to retrieve the body from the river. Upon inspection, he confirmed that the remains belonged to another unidentified woman, putting an end to the rumours.
The Nigeria Police Force has taken custody of the recovered remains, and authorities have advised members of the public with missing female relatives to contact the police for identification.
Relocation from Delta State to Lagos
Onyema initially built 44 Clothing in Asaba, Delta State, where her brand established a strong regional presence. She later relocated operations to Lagos State to expand her fashion business into the commercial hub.
Following her return, Onyema is expected to provide an official statement to law enforcement to assist in documenting the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
