Authorities confirmed that the victims killed in the attack included three students aged 5, 8, and 11, along with a staff member.

Two other individuals—a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher—were critically injured and remain in intensive care.

The suspect, identified as a 16-year-old local resident, was also killed at the scene after being pursued and shot by an armed community member inside the school building, according to police officials.

School district suspends operations as federal agencies launch probe

Following the lockdown, emergency responders evacuated surviving students by bus to a nearby church facility, where frantic families were reunited with their children.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed devastating sorrow over the tragic loss of life, announcing that all classes, athletic programs, and extracurricular activities across the school district would be cancelled on Friday.

“Our district is stunned and heartbroken by this tragic event,” Superintendent Cook stated. “Our immediate priorities remain caring for our students and staff while providing full support to emergency responders.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and the Oregon State Police have joined local law enforcement agencies to investigate the gunman’s motives and determine how he obtained the weapon used in the attack.
