Three young children from the same family have tragically lost their lives after drowning in an abandoned fish pond located in Saniko Community, Agbarha-Otor, within the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The victims have been identified as Great Anthony Ikpera, 6; Goodluck Anthony Ikpera, 8; and Vwegba Jite Ikpera, 12. The siblings belonged to the Ikpera family from the neighbouring Awirhe Community.
Search ends in tragedy behind local community
The tragedy unfolded after the children were reported missing by their parents over the weekend.
A search effort launched by family and community members culminated on Sunday morning, October 11, when their bodies were discovered in a disused fish pond situated near a flowing stream behind the settlement.
Local sources, including Agbarha Youth Council President Rufus Ovotu, confirmed that the children’s remains were recovered from the water and subsequently laid to rest near the stream. The exact circumstances surrounding how the siblings entered the pond remain unclear.

The incident has drawn widespread grief across the area, with residents and well-wishers visiting the bereaved Ikpera family to pay their respects and offer condolences.
In the wake of the tragedy, Ovotu cautioned parents and guardians across Delta State to keep a close eye on young children and steer them away from unmonitored water bodies, streams, and abandoned excavation pits, particularly during periods of elevated water levels.
