A 19-year-old Nigerian national, Gift Ayoola, has been sentenced to four years in prison by a United Kingdom court for recording and selling child sexual abuse material online.

The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, at Cardiff Crown Court in Wales, following an extensive law enforcement investigation into an online network trading illicit media.

Details of the offences

According to prosecutor John Ryan, Ayoola engaged young children online and coerced them into producing sexually explicit material.

In one instance, the defendant instructed a 12-year-old girl to expose herself and watch him perform explicit acts. Other communications involved victims as young as two to four years old.

British police first arrested Ayoola at his residence on Pendyris Street in the Riverside area of Cardiff in January 2025. Investigators seized multiple electronic devices containing hundreds of illicit files:

Category A (most severe): 455 images, including four directly recorded by the defendant.

Category B: 401 images.

Category C: 389 images.

Additional Content: Extreme pornography depicting bestiality.

Evidence presented in court established that Ayoola operated across messaging platforms like Telegram and WhatsApp to distribute the files.

He received financial transactions via PayPal totalling £5,000 from a single buyer in exchange for 877 illicit images and videos.

Despite his initial arrest, Ayoola was arrested a second time on March 5, 2026, after law enforcement discovered he remained in possession of additional illegal images involving children as young as four years old, including 14 Category A, 15 Category B, and 22 Category C files.

Legal representation and sentencing

Ayoola subsequently pleaded guilty to charges including:

Making indecent images of children

Distributing indecent images of children

Possessing extreme pornography

Causing or inciting children to engage in sexual activity

Defence counsel Martha Smith-Higgins noted in mitigation that the defendant had no prior criminal record.

She highlighted that Ayoola had lost his mother at six years old before moving from Nigeria to the UK, adding that he was extremely young at the time of the offences and felt remorseful for his actions.

Presiding Judge Vanessa Francis rejected defence arguments suggesting the crimes were not sexually motivated or that the defendant lacked attraction to children. In her sentencing remarks, Judge Francis stated:

“The children you exploited were much younger than you; some were very young indeed. These children required protection, and you were encouraging them to pose for extremely harmful material. This was a grievous form of sexual abuse. These were not simply images—they were children whose trust and vulnerability were exploited in order to make indecent material.”

In addition to his four-year custodial sentence, Ayoola was made subject to indefinite sex offender notification requirements and issued a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
