Police probe death of final-year OAU student

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has confirmed the death of a final-year student, Oluwole Seun, following a suspected suicide at an off-campus apartment.
The deceased, who was in his final year in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was found at his residence in the Damico area of Ooni Layout, Ile-Ife. Close acquaintances reported observing no signs of unusual behaviour or distress prior to the incident.
University response
In an official statement released on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, OAU Public Relations Officer Abiodun Olarewaju confirmed that the institution received an emergency report regarding the situation at approximately 1:30 PM on Tuesday, September 15.
Following the distress call, the university’s Quick Response and Security (QRS) Team was dispatched to the off-campus location alongside officers from the Moore ‘A’ Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
Rescuers transported Seun to the University Health Centre, where an attending medical doctor pronounced him dead on arrival.
Police investigation and institutional support
University officials confirmed that evidence and items recovered from the scene have been transferred to law enforcement officers to assist with their ongoing investigation. The Division of Student Affairs has also been mobilised to provide welfare support and counselling to affected classmates and peers.
Extending his condolences to the deceased’s family and classmates, OAU Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire urged students coping with emotional distress, financial pressure, or academic difficulties to utilise campus mental health resources.
“No student should feel that he or she has to confront overwhelming difficulties alone,” Professor Bamire stated, while appealing to the university community to avoid spreading unverified rumours while police finalise their probe.
