Husband accuses wife of ruining his 70th birthday celebration
A 70-year-old man, identified as Omodele, has been accused of exchanging nude photos with a young woman he met on Facebook.
The accusation was made by his wife at the Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, where the man had gone seeking the formal dissolution of his nearly 30-year marriage to his wife, Irede.
He accused his wife of domestic violence, public humiliation, and destruction of property.
Testifying before court president Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, Omodele described his wife as uncouth and violent, alleging that she had threatened his life with a knife on two separate occasions during heated arguments.
“I sleep with one eye open because I fear she could stab me to death in my sleep,” Omodele told the court, adding that his wife routinely humiliated him before neighbours and relatives by falsely claiming he was sexually inadequate.
Omodele further recounted an incident during his 70th birthday celebration, alleging that Irede provoked a fight, tore his expensive celebratory attire to shreds, and destroyed his birthday cake in front of invited guests.
He prayed the court to dissolve the union and issue a restraining order against her.
Wife consents to divorce
Responding to the allegations, Irede consented to the dissolution of the marriage, countering that she had endured decades of physical abuse, financial neglect, and marital irresponsibility from her husband.
She denied being the aggressor during the birthday incident, alleging that Omodele beat her to a pulp in front of guests, which prompted her to retaliate by tearing his clothes and ruining the cake.
She further claimed that Omodele never paid her bride price and only briefly provided a monthly feeding allowance of ₦120,000 between February and May of the previous year.
Irede also accused her 70-year-old husband of moral bankruptcy, alleging that she caught him exchanging nude photographs with a woman he met on Facebook.
She further claimed he obtained the names of her, their children, and her mother to pass along to the contact for diabolical purposes.
Admitting that the marriage had irretrievably broken down, Irede requested that the court grant her custody of their children while mandating Omodele to pay for their monthly upkeep.
Following the testimonies, Court President Mrs. S.M. Akintayo adjourned the matter to a later date for further hearing and cross-examination.
