Mrs. Oluyemisi Debo-Adesina, wife of former Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian and former Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, Debo Adesina, has issued an urgent appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for financial intervention to save her husband’s life following a massive stroke.
In an open letter to the President, Mrs. Debo-Adesina disclosed that her husband traveled to Canada on June 24, 2026, to visit his family, but suffered a severe stroke on July 9, 2026.
He was subsequently rushed to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Trillium Hospital in Mississauga, where he spent over a month before being transferred to Etobicoke General Hospital, where he remains under critical care.
Medical bills exceed CAD $205,000 as hospital threatens care interruption
Providing an update on his medical status, Mrs. Debo-Adesina shared that her husband is gradually emerging from a prolonged induced coma, though his overall condition remains critical, requiring round-the-clock intensive monitoring.
She revealed that the prolonged hospitalisation has accumulated astronomical medical bills, which stood at over CAD $205,000 as of August 24, 2026, with costs rising daily.
According to her, the situation has grown dire following warnings from hospital management regarding the continuation of his treatment unless substantial payments or settlement arrangements are made against the mounting debt.
Appeal to President Tinubu’s long-standing relationship
Reaching out directly to President Tinubu, Mrs. Debo-Adesina appealed to his long-standing relationship with her husband across his careers as a veteran journalist, public intellectual, and diplomat.
“It is against this deeply painful background that I am reaching out personally to you, Mr. President, because you know Debo in different capacities—as a journalist and Editor-in-Chief, a public intellectual, a diplomat, an aburo, and as someone with whom you have shared a relationship over the years,” she wrote.
She added: “As a wife and mother, I have had to put aside my personal reservations and reach out to the people who have known, worked with, respected and interacted with my husband throughout the different chapters of his life and service… At a time when every effort counts, every contribution matters, and every day of medical care is precious, I am appealing to you in the hope that your compassion and intervention will help us through this extraordinarily difficult period.”
The family continues to seek support from well-wishers and associates to ensure Ambassador Adesina receives the sustained medical care required for his recovery.
