A cross-country flight from British Columbia to Ontario came to an abrupt halt after a young passenger’s refusal to remain seated compromised safety protocols, leaving the entire plane stranded overnight.
The incident occurred aboard a Toronto-bound Porter Airlines flight preparing for departure at Victoria International Airport.
As the aircraft taxied toward the runway, flight attendants noticed a child standing upright in a seat and refusing to fasten the seatbelt.
Safety compliance halts departure
Despite repeated attempts by both the accompanying parent and the cabin crew, the child could not be safely secured. Under aviation safety regulations, commercial aircraft are strictly prohibited from taking off if any passenger remains unbuckled.
Because the situation remained unresolved, the flight crew made the call to abort takeoff, return the plane to the terminal, and remove the parent and child from the aircraft.
Operational delays trigger airport curfew
While the decision to deplane the family was straightforward, resolving the situation on the ground proved time-consuming.
Airline staff had to locate and unload the family’s checked luggage from the cargo hold, refile flight plans with air traffic control, and complete mandatory safety paperwork.
By the time these administrative and ground procedures were finished, the flight had blown past Victoria International Airport’s 12:30 a.m. runway operational deadline. With the runway closed for the night, Porter Airlines had no choice but to cancel the flight entirely and order all remaining passengers to disembark.
Passengers rebooked for next-day travel
Porter Airlines issued an apology to the affected travellers, who were forced to spend the night in Victoria before catching a rescheduled flight the following evening.
Flight tracking data from FlightAware confirmed that the replacement flight successfully departed Victoria International Airport at 10:49 p.m. the following day, touching down at Toronto Pearson International Airport early Saturday morning.
