The Oyo State Government has officially refuted circulating reports suggesting that a ransom was paid to secure the freedom of the pupils and teachers kidnapped in the Oriire Local Government Area.

Authorities have labelled the claims as completely baseless and deceptive.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, firmly dismissed the allegations.

He characterised the rumour as a calculated attempt by irresponsible online platforms to spread misinformation and stir public unrest.

“While both the Oyo State and Federal Governments are working tirelessly to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped children and their educators, no ransom has been paid to these criminals, either directly or through intermediaries,” Oyelade clarified.

The Commissioner urged citizens to ignore unverified reports and rely solely on validated updates from official government communication channels.

He reiterated that the administration, under Governor Seyi Makinde, is collaborating intensely with various security agencies to resolve the crisis and bring the victims home safely.

Background on the Oyo State schoolchildren abduction

The incident dates back to May 15, when bandits launched a coordinated assault on three schools located in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele communities within the Oriire Local Government Area.

Tragically, one teacher lost their life during the raid, and several students and staff members were taken hostage.

As the victims remain in captivity, joint efforts between state authorities, federal agencies, and security forces continue to be intensified to guarantee their safe release.
