The Ogun State Police Command has cracked the horrific murder case of veteran broadcaster Olakitan “Kiitan” Oyesiku and her domestic security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, following the arrest of three prime suspects, including the broadcaster’s former security guard.
The breakthrough came just days after the two victims were discovered lifeless on June 21 at Madam Oyesiku’s private residence in the Owode-Egba area of the state.
Following the gruesome attack, the perpetrators had made away with the retired Ogun State Television (OGTV) star’s luxury Lexus RX 330 SUV.
A handwritten note leads to the killers
Briefing journalists at the command headquarters, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, revealed that detectives successfully cracked the case open by using cutting-edge forensic analysis on a piece of evidence left carelessly at the crime scene.
“A handwritten note recovered from the scene of the incident was submitted for forensic examination and analysis, which generated valuable investigative leads,” CP Ojajuni explained.
Armed with high-level intelligence tracking, police operatives tracked down the mastermind and principal suspect, 22-year-old Sodeinde Olajuwon Philip, on June 24.
Philip, who is a former private security guard to the late broadcaster, was fished out at a construction site in Ibara GRA, Abeokuta, where he was hiding out and working as a manual labourer.
Oyesiku was overpowered and murdered out of “grievances”
Upon his arrest, Philip cracked under intense interrogation and confessed to the crime, naming his co-conspirators.
His statements led to the swift arrest of two accomplices: Sakirudeen Abdulraheem Ayoola, 27 (an active security guard elsewhere), and Sobu Obafunsho, 36 (a local bricklayer).
According to the police chief, Philip admitted to planning the deadly house invasion due to lingering financial or personal grievances stemming from his time working under Madam Oyesiku.
“The suspect stated that the murder of Madam Olakitan Oyesiku was intended to ‘teach her a lesson’,” CP Ojajuni told reporters.
Detailing the execution of the crime, the suspects confessed that they first ambushed and overpowered the active security guard, Pelumi Adetayo, to gain access to the main compound. They broke into the broadcaster’s apartment and killed her before returning to finish off the guard to eliminate any living eye-witnesses to the crime.
Murder weapons recovered
The State Police Command confirmed that the late broadcaster’s missing Lexus RX 330 has been successfully recovered by trackers.
Furthermore, homicide detectives have recovered several critical physical exhibits linked directly to the killings, including a broken hammer, a sharp cutlass, a heavy wooden plank, and the black pen used to write the incriminating note.
CP Ojajuni assured members of the public and the grieving media fraternity that the state command will not tolerate violence against vulnerable citizens.
He stated that all three suspects will be formally arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction as soon as the active investigations are officially concluded.
