The local religious community in Enugu and the wider Nigerian digital space have been thrown into a state of shock following the rapid circulation of explicit videos allegedly involving Bishop James Ogwo, the General Overseer of the Oyoyo Jesus Outreach Ministry.
While the graphic materials have been deliberately withheld by mainstream media platforms due to their explicit nature, the scandal has taken over local online forums and social media commentary tracks.
Reports from within the ministry’s local circles suggest that the cleric has privately pushed back against the allegations, reportedly claiming that the viral footage is a targeted, malicious attack created using advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) deepfake tools.
However, the explanation has done little to calm the storm on social media, where users are fiercely debating pastoral accountability and the identities of the participants.
Netizens express disappointment and shock
A wave of reactions tracked via local online communities like the Coal City Connect network on X shows a mixture of utter disbelief, local confirmation, and dark humour regarding the ironies surrounding the ministry’s unique name (Oyoyo translates colloquially to unspeakable sweetness).
Reacting to the viral development, a user named Cheezy expressed deep reflection on the hidden lives of spiritual leaders, writing: “Na only God know who dey worship am in truth and in spirit. Behind closed doors and prying eyes, men are weak in flesh and can’t resist.”
Others took a more direct approach, confirming the local identity of the individual in the footage. User Nwoke na Ifve! noted in the local dialect, “Nawa o. Okwa raw ka that man na aku” (Wow, this man is doing it raw).
Outrage over alleged involvement of married church members
Beyond the actions of the General Overseer, a significant portion of public anger has been directed toward the female members seen in the recordings, with several online commentators alleging that some are married women within the congregation.
Commenting on the structural impact of the tape on families, Billy advised severe marital consequences if the rumours are validated: “Pastor James having sex with his followers. Thankfully, the faces of the ladies are exposed. Reasonable men will avoid them; if they are married, their husbands should fling them away.”
Supporting this theory, another user under the handle Nwa amuru na Nma added flatly, “I bet you the sister is married.”
The fallout has also had immediate real-world consequences for those linked to the cleric. Highlighting the immediate community backlash, user andrewobo shared, “See my caretaker for house oo, them don tear am quick notice first.”
The growing “AI deepfake” defence line
As the controversy deepens, the claims that the video was manufactured using AI technology have sparked a parallel debate.
Over the past year, several Nigerian public figures and religious leaders caught in compromising situations have frequently blamed digital manipulation to protect their reputations.
While deepfake technology has undoubtedly become more sophisticated, digital forensic observers note that the public remains highly cynical of the “AI defence” when detailed, multi-angled video clips emerge online.
For members of the Oyoyo Jesus Ministry, the congregation remains deeply polarised between loyalists who believe their leader is being framed by spiritual and political detractors, and those demanding a transparent, public address from the Bishop himself.
