Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have neutralised two suspected kidnappers, recovering a firearm and ₦2.2 million in cash during a high-stakes tactical operation.
The breakthrough followed a fierce gun battle linked to the rescue of an abducted citizen, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed the development in an official statement issued on June 24, 2026.
According to the spokesperson, the operation was executed by the command’s specialised Anti-Kidnapping Unit as part of intensified manoeuvres to dismantle violent criminal networks across the state.
The abduction and release of victim
The victim was originally violently abducted on June 11, 2026, at Ogbe Village in Ogun State.
Upon receiving the distress report, the command immediately activated its tactical assets under the direct coordination of the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni.
“Through sustained intelligence gathering, strategic surveillance, and relentless operational pressure mounted on the criminal gang, the victim was eventually released unharmed on June 18, 2026,” the statement read.
The hideout raid and shootout
Refusing to let the perpetrators evade justice after the victim’s release, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit mounted a coordinated manhunt.
Acting on definitive, credible intelligence, operatives successfully tracked the remnants of the syndicate to their hidden enclave within the state.
The encounter quickly turned violent upon arrival.
“On sighting the operatives, the suspects opened fire in a desperate attempt to resist arrest and escape,” DSP Babaseyi stated. “The operatives responded professionally, leading to a gun duel during which two of the suspected kidnappers were neutralised, while other members of the gang fled the scene with gunshot injuries.”
Recovered exhibits and ongoing manhunt
A thorough search conducted at the scene and on the bodies of the neutralised suspects yielded substantial criminal exhibits, such as one single-barrel gun, one expended cartridge, an operational mobile phone and the sum of ₦2,200,000 (Two Million, Two Hundred Thousand Naira) in cash, suspected to be the proceeds of their illicit ransoms.
Reacting to the successful encounter, the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, highly commended the gallantry, courage, and professional effectiveness displayed by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.
CP Ojajuni reiterated that Ogun State will remain entirely hostile terrain for criminal elements, assuring residents that the command will continue to aggressively deploy intelligence-led policing and robust tactical operations to safeguard lives and property.
Meanwhile, the command has intensified its manhunt to track down, locate, and apprehend the fleeing gang members who escaped with gunshot wounds.
Authorities have urged members of the public and medical practitioners to remain highly vigilant and promptly report anyone seen with suspicious bullet injuries to the nearest police division.
