The explosive divorce saga involving Nollywood actor Akin Olaiya and his ex-wife has taken a dramatic turn online as social media users react to resurfaced footage of the couple’s wedding day.

Following the woman’s emotional public statement detailing allegations of betrayal, mistreatment, and her ex-husband’s subsequent marriage to her best friend, netizens have thoroughly picked apart old videos of the ceremony.

Commentators claim that the signs of an unstable foundation were visible right from the altar, with many pointing out the bride’s noticeably sombre expression during what was supposed to be her happiest day.

Akin Olaiya was the only one dancing happily at the wedding

A massive wave of reactions centred heavily on the stark contrast between the groom’s energetic demeanour and the bride’s restrained, seemingly unhappy body language in the clips.

Reacting to the footage on X (formerly Twitter), a user named Tunji Taiwo noted, “I think that marriage was forced because seeing that the woman was not happy shows she was forced to marry Mr Akin Olaiya.”

Echoing this sentiment, Adegoke Vickky asked, “She’s not even happy. Is the marriage forced on her?” while another netizen, Owolabi, added, “The girl was not happy. Did they force her to marry him? The guy was just dancing and smiling alone.”

The viral clips left many wondering why the union went ahead if the energy was so mismatched. Commentary from SirRoteh___ read: “The video obviously showed that something wasn’t right. It gave the impression that you weren’t completely sure about the marriage, or that you were being pressured into it. God help you both.”

Meanwhile, Akinola Ifeoluwa dropped a theory regarding the timeline of the betrayal, tweeting, “She looks like she just found out about him and her bestie here, but she has to go on with the wedding.”

The “Red Flag” debate sparks relationship discourse

The unfolding drama has reignited a wider conversation across the Nigerian digital space regarding relationship warning signs, financial motivations, and societal pressure.

Some users blamed the quick collapse of the marriage on ignoring obvious warning signs in exchange for financial security.

Netizen V.I.C.T.O.R.Y wrote, “Some women, all they see is money and ignore any other red flag,” while K€N advised his followers to trust their guts early on: “I have maintained that the signs are always there. When a person doesn’t care about you, give them space. If it does not feel right, it’s not by force.”

Conversely, others firmly placed the blame on the groom’s demeanour, calling his high-energy performance a front. “Na the man be red flag. All this dance wey he dey dance na Oju-aiye (eyewitness pleasing). He is a devil in human form,” argued MessiGOAT10.

Offering a more philosophical take on relationships, user femi Johnson chimed in to say, “The only red flag I can advise someone on is the red flag that you can’t cope with… because to be honest, everybody gets red flag for body.”

A short-lived union

As the video continues to make the rounds, the overriding sentiment remains one of shock at how quickly the relationship disintegrated.

Commenting on the lifespan of the union, Segun Omotayo lamented, “Marriage wey no last for a year before divorce.”

With the ex-wife explicitly stating in her viral video that she has moved on to prioritise her peace and is “living her better life,” the public interest in the fallout remains at an all-time high.

Mr Akin Olaiya has yet to put out an official counter-statement addressing the viral reactions or the specific allegations of marrying his ex-wife’s best friend.
