The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) is set to launch a series of empowerment and capacity-building initiatives in Kano State this week.

The targeted interventions are specifically engineered to equip local women, youth, and students with high-demand technical skills to foster economic self-reliance.

The rollout will be personally spearheaded by the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NASENI, Mr Khalil Suleiman Halilu. According to officials, the project forms a vital pillar of the agency’s strategic commitment to driving grassroots innovation, accelerating renewable energy adoption, and expanding STEM education across Nigeria.

“She-Powers” initiative takes off

The operational calendar kicks off on Thursday, June 25, 2026, with the official closing ceremony of the specialised NASENI She-Powers Energy Initiative in Kano.

The intensive pilot cohort successfully trained 50 women selected from the Kumbotso and Tarauni Local Government Areas. Throughout the intensive practical curriculum, participants mastered: Solar energy installations and hardware deployment, Renewable energy systems maintenance, and Clean-energy enterprise development and management

The initiative directly aims to position northern women at the forefront of the rapidly expanding green economy, creating immediate avenues for community-level income generation.

Expanding into core technical trades

Following the clean energy graduation, NASENI will officially flag off its broader Skill Acquisition Training Programmes on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

This multi-sectoral development drive will deliver rapid vocational training and robust empowerment packages across four critical industrial tracks:

Renewable Energy: Advanced solar installation and electrical maintenance.

Heavy Industry: Modern welding and advanced metal fabrication.

Digital Economy: Mobile phone hardware diagnostic and repair techniques.

Agro-Allied Business: Hygienic dry food processing and commercial packaging.

Boosting STEM education

Beyond individual vocational tracks, NASENI is extending the intervention directly into the classroom.

The agency confirmed that selected schools across Kano State will receive high-end laptops and customised STEM innovation kits.

The hardware injection is designed to modernise technical learning labs and stimulate early interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The high-profile flag-off ceremony on Saturday will feature the Deputy Governor of Kano State as the Special Guest of Honour, with NASENI chief Khalil Suleiman Halilu presiding as the Chief Host.

Spokespersons for the agency reiterated that these localised infrastructure interventions are purposefully deployed to bridge the domestic tech gap, lower the regional unemployment index, and ultimately act as a catalyst for Nigeria’s overarching industrial development.
