The Kano State Police Command has arrested and detained a popular female TikTok personality, Fati Cele, following the controversial and mysterious death of her boyfriend, Isma’il Makaye, at her residence.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the development on Saturday via a WhatsApp message, stating that the social media influencer is currently in police custody while a full-scale investigation is underway.
Fati Cele, a native of Borno State who boasts a massive following of over 32,000 users on TikTok, resides in a rented apartment in the Danbare area of Kano, where the tragedy occurred.
Traces of blood and severe burns
According to local sources, the incident came to light after the TikTok influencer suddenly emerged from her apartment screaming that a fire outbreak had consumed her home, prompting alarmed neighbours to rush to her aid.
However, the rescue took a dark turn when neighbours entered the apartment. Instead of a typical house fire scene, they discovered Makaye suffering from horrific, severe burn injuries alongside suspicious traces of blood on his body.
“When people entered the house, they found Isma’il with burn injuries and traces of blood on his body,” a source close to the family revealed.
Makaye was immediately rushed by residents to the Nassarawa Hospital in an emergency bid to save his life, but he tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly after admission.
Following the suspicious nature of the injuries and the victim’s subsequent passing, officers attached to the Dorayi Babba Police Division moved in swiftly to take Fati Cele into custody to uncover the true circumstances surrounding the incident.
Victim, a popular cosmetics trader laid to rest
The deceased, Isma’il Makaye, was a well-known cosmetics trader who resided in the Hotoro Tishama area of Kano.
Following the completion of preliminary medical examinations, his remains were released by the hospital authorities to his grieving family.
Family associates confirmed that Makaye has since been buried at the Unguwa Uku Yan Awaki cemetery in Kano in strict accordance with Islamic rites.
While the police command has declined to provide further details regarding what specific charges the internet personality might face, detectives are reportedly treating the residence as a crime scene to determine if the fire was an accident or a cover-up for foul play.
