An American tourist who narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob in Bogotá after being accused of child abuse was actually performing life-saving first aid on his adopted son, official investigations have confirmed.

The 36-year-old Texas native had been arrested on June 13, 2026, after a misunderstanding triggered a massive public outcry in the northern district of the Colombian capital.

The balcony misunderstanding and mob response

The incident began when a local resident filmed a video of the tourist holding his 7-year-old son on an apartment balcony.

Believing she was witnessing an immoral assault, the woman began screaming, “He’s abusing the child, let him go!”

The footage went viral on social media within minutes, drawing an enraged crowd to the property. Angered by ongoing local sensitivities regarding child sex tourism, protesters blocked the tower’s lobby to prevent the man from leaving.

Responding police officers had to escort the American through a hostile crowd as they placed him under protective arrest.

Presidential intervention and official exoneration

The narrative shifted completely following a formal review by prosecutors and medical experts. It was revealed that the father was desperately administering the Heimlich manoeuvre after his son began choking to death on poorly chewed food.

Colombia’s President, Gustavo Petro, addressed the nation to correct the record and clear the tourist’s name:

“I must notify Colombian society because my commitment is to the truth… He took him out to the balcony due to a clog from eating food poorly. The images deceived the Colombians, who went en masse to defend the child. Now we have indeed made victims of boys and girls. If these indications of the facts are confirmed, justice must grant him all his rights as a human being.”

An official report released by the Colombian prosecutor’s office via Noticias Caracol explicitly determined that “there had been no sexual abuse and no physical violence,” concluding there was no evidence of criminal conduct.

Aftermath and child protective care

Bogotá Mayor Carlos Galán confirmed that three children found in the apartment were evaluated at a local medical centre.

Following standard legal protocols for high-stress incidents, Colombia’s state agency for child protection temporarily took custody of the children.

President Petro used the incident to issue a broader warning about how unverified clips can rapidly manipulate public consciousness online, noting that the viral spread resembled information warfare tactics often deployed during election cycles.
