A domestic disturbance in Southern California turned fatal on Sunday night, June 14, 2026, after a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed by law enforcement officers.
The incident occurred during an alleged knife attack involving the teenager, his mother, and her boyfriend.
Officers respond to violent domestic call
The Santa Ana Police Department reported that dispatchers received an emergency call at approximately 10:30 PM from an apartment complex located in the 3400 block of Main Street.
According to police statements, a man reported that his girlfriend’s 16-year-old son was destroying property inside the residence.
The caller alleged that the teenager, who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, had escalated the dispute by stabbing him with a knife.
How the teenager was shot
Upon arriving at the scene, responding officers encountered the armed teenager inside the apartment.
Police officials state that an officer-involved shooting occurred shortly after contact was made, as the teen refused to drop the weapon.
The 16-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. No police officers sustained injuries during the confrontation.
“Our officers were presented with a very complex situation,” Santa Ana police spokesperson Natalie Garcia stated.
“Our concern in a family dispute like that is just to de-escalate and try to get the cooperation of all parties involved, regardless of age. Unfortunately, in this situation, the 16-year-old was armed with a lethal weapon, and our officers engaged him.”
Multiple investigations underway
As per standard protocol for lethal force incidents, the shooting is undergoing independent reviews. The investigation is being handled concurrently by the Santa Ana Police Department’s Homicide Unit; the Internal Affairs Division, and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Investigators have not yet released the identity of the deceased minor or the condition of the boyfriend who suffered the initial knife wound.
