Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of President Bola Tinubu and the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to intensify efforts to secure the release of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Tinubu-Ojo made the appeal during a condolence visit to the palace of the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, where she expressed concern over the worsening security situation and the continued captivity of the victims.
The abducted pupils and their teachers were reportedly seized by gunmen on May 15 and have been in captivity ever since.
Speaking during the visit, Tinubu-Ojo acknowledged the efforts already being made by security agencies and government authorities but insisted that more decisive action was needed to ensure the victims regain their freedom without delay.
“I know that the Federal Government and the State Government are working fervently to secure the release of these children and their teachers, but they should do more,” she said.
The President’s daughter also urged residents to support security efforts by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious activities in their communities.
According to her, effective collaboration between citizens and security agencies remains critical in tackling insecurity and preventing criminal elements from operating freely.
She advised community members not to ignore unusual movements or the presence of unfamiliar persons in their neighbourhoods, stressing that timely information could help security agencies prevent crimes and rescue victims.
The incident has drawn fresh attention to concerns over the safety of schoolchildren in parts of the country, particularly following a series of abductions targeting students and educational institutions in recent years.
Tinubu-Ojo’s intervention comes amid growing calls from residents and community leaders for the authorities to accelerate efforts to secure the release of the victims and improve security across the state.
As Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Tinubu-Ojo is one of the country’s most prominent market leaders and has on several occasions participated in public advocacy efforts on issues affecting communities and national development.
She was installed as the Iyaloja-General following the death of her grandmother, the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, a respected market leader and influential political figure.
Since assuming the position, she has played a visible role in mobilising support for economic and social initiatives affecting traders and women across Nigeria.
Meanwhile, security agencies have continued operations aimed at locating the abducted schoolchildren and their teachers, although authorities have yet to provide an official update on when they are expected to regain their freedom.
