The Anambra State Government has pledged to ensure that justice is served for a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly gang-raped by her guardian and seven other men in Nawfia, a community in Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
The matter came to light through the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, when the plight of the teenager was brought to her attention in her office in Awka on June 4, 2026.
The commissioner broke down in tears when she saw the girl, vowing to ensure that the suspects responsible for her predicament would be apprehended and brought to book.
She expressed disgust and anger at the level of trauma the young woman had been subjected to at the hands of the person she trusted to take care of her.
The survivor’s case is particularly disheartening because a medical examination had shown that she is two months pregnant following the persistent sexual assault by the suspects.
Help came for the teenager when a Catholic priest from Nawfia learnt of her case and waded in. He then contacted the commissioner for assistance in handling the matter.
The commissioner urged men to protect women and young girls, rather than take advantage of their vulnerability.
“The ministry assures the victim of her safety and pledges to follow the case diligently to ensure justice is served,” the commissioner said.
The survivor told the commissioner and others in her office that her guardian had a habit of coming to her bed every night to take advantage of her.
She said after he was done, other men in the house would also take their turns.
The teenager narrated that it took a “Good Samaritan” to bail her from the ongoing abuse last week.
Since then, some of the suspects have been arrested and are currently in police custody.
Reacting to a question, the teenager said the wife of her guardian is recovering from a stroke and was therefore helpless and unable to protect her.
She disclosed that a total of eight men had regular intercourse with her, two of whom had been arrested by the police, while the remaining six took to their heels before the police arrived.
Investigation is ongoing on the case at the Nawfia Police Station.
