A father in Texas, United States of America, shot and killed a suspected carjacker trying to dispossess him of his car, carrying his family, in what authorities are treating as a case of self-defence.
The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon, May 3, along Highway 66, roughly 18 miles from downtown Dallas, according to the Garland Police Department.
Police said the situation began around 3:30 p.m. when the suspect crashed into two vehicles before fleeing to a nearby gas station. There, he reportedly tried to forcibly take multiple vehicles.
Surveillance footage later showed the suspect approaching a white Chevrolet Impala parked in a shopping centre across the street. The car was occupied by the father, several children, and two adult women.
Authorities said the suspect confronted the driver, prompting the father to exit the vehicle. A struggle ensued as the man allegedly attempted to pull the father away from the car, while the children and other passengers fled to safety.
During the confrontation, the father drew a firearm and discharged more than 10 rounds at the suspect.
The injured man was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released, though police described him as a Hispanic male.
All occupants of the targeted vehicle escaped unharmed.
Investigators confirmed that the father remained at the scene, cooperated fully with authorities, and surrendered his weapon as part of the inquiry.
According to police, no charges are expected to be filed against him. Officials indicated that preliminary findings support a self-defence claim, noting the immediate threat posed to both the driver and his family.
The incident has sparked reactions from members of the local community, with some expressing support for the father’s actions in protecting his children during what they described as a fast-moving and dangerous situation.
Police say investigations are ongoing, including efforts to determine what led to the suspect’s actions.
