The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency has issued a caution to businesses across Lagos State on the increasing use of misleading pricing and undisclosed charges in advertisements.
In a statement released on Monday, the agency’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, criticised the growing trend where businesses promote goods and services at appealing rates, only for buyers to encounter additional fees or altered terms at the point of purchase.
He noted that such practices erode consumer confidence and violate established consumer protection regulations. Solebo stressed that all advertised prices must be transparent, accurate, and all-inclusive, adding that businesses are obligated to present pricing information in a clear and straightforward manner.
He warned that tactics such as vague pricing, false discount claims, and bait-and-switch strategies designed to mislead customers would attract regulatory action.
The agency also advised companies running promotions, discounts, or raffle campaigns tied to purchases to avoid ambiguous phrases like “while stock lasts” unless properly defined. According to Solebo, such expressions could infringe on consumer rights if not accompanied by clear terms.
He further urged businesses to clearly state the duration of promotional offers, including specific start and end dates, alongside all applicable conditions.
Solebo emphasised that non-compliance with fair pricing and advertising standards constitutes a violation of the Lagos State Consumer Protection Law, particularly provisions relating to the consumer’s right to accurate information. He warned that offenders could face sanctions, fines, or prosecution.
The agency called on businesses—ranging from supermarkets, online vendors and automobile dealers, to electronics retailers, and service providers—to review their pricing structures and advertising methods to ensure adherence to the law.
Consumers were also encouraged to report instances of deceptive pricing or false advertising through LASCOPA’s official complaint channels.
The agency reiterated its commitment to promoting transparency and safeguarding consumer rights while fostering a fair and competitive business environment in Lagos State.
