Burnt car

A soldier has been killed while another was injured when gunmen opened fire on troops during an assessment mission in Imo State.

The soldiers, attached to the 34 Artillery Brigade, were reportedly deployed to inspect a burnt Hilux vehicle along the SPDC–Etekuru road in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area on May 4, 2026.

According to reports, the team came under heavy attack shortly after arriving at the scene.

During the exchange, a soldier identified as David Emmanuel Chuka was killed, while a colleague sustained injuries.

The assailants were said to have seized two AK-47 rifles from the troops and damaged a military vehicle before fleeing.

Reinforcements were subsequently dispatched to the area, forcing the attackers to retreat.

A follow-up operation at the location led to the discovery of two burnt vehicles and two bodies, which were evacuated to a hospital morgue for further examination.

Security operatives have continued efforts to track down those responsible for the attack as investigations and operations in the area remain ongoing.
