An unknown number of persons are missing after a boat carrying over 100 passengers capsized in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.

The boat capsized in the Binneri community of Karim Lamido midway through River Benue on Saturday evening, October 28, 2023.

The boat was returning from a fish market in the Mayoreneyo community of Ardo-Kola LGA of the state.

It was gathered that none of the passengers wore life jackets.

The spokesman for the state police command, Abdullahi Usman, confirmed the incident to journalists on Sunday.

He was, however, silent on the accident casualty figure.

A source in the area Mr. Jessy Danladi told Channels Television that a few minutes after the incident, three bodies were recovered and, thereafter, twelve others were recovered by fishermen in the area.

The source disclosed that the ill-fated boat was returning from a fish market in the Mayoreneyo community of the Ardo-Kola Local Government Area before the incident took place 50 minutes after takeoff.

Acting Chairman of Inland Water Transporters in the state, Jidda Mayorenero, who confirmed the incident said 15 bodies have been recovered so far.
