Naira scarcity: Umuahia sex workers introduce ‘bonanza’ to boost patronage

Following the ongoing naira scarcity, which has negatively impacted many businesses, commercial sex workers in Umuahia, Abia State, have devised new strategies to boost patronage.

According to an undercover investigation carried out by Daily Post, the scarlet ladies of Umuahia have significantly slashed their rates for customers paying cash, while adjusting it slightly higher for those doing transfer.

Customers willing to pay the new notes can enjoy up to 70 percent discount on their standard rates depending on their bargaining power.

The news platform said it conducted its investigation around some red light areas in the capital city and some adjoining areas like Umudike, the host community of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture.

It was discovered that the strategies deployed by the ladies also included what one of them called ‘one for one bonanza’, which entails giving a customer who pays cash for one round of sex an extra round free of charge.

At Ojike Street by Bende road, which hosts two night clubs and at Abia Tower junction, off Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in Umuahia, desperation for the new Naira notes has forced some sex workers in the area to lower their rate to as low as N1,500 per ‘quickie’, provided the customer is paying cash.

The rate is not applicable to customers doing bank transfers.

One of the sex workers who simply gave her name as Stefanie, told the news platform she previously made about N90,000 from her business in any good week but lamented that she now struggled to make N20, 000 cash per week since this naira scarcity started.

Stefanie, 23, who spoke at Ojike street continued, “My colleague and I started using a new style to retain our old customers and to get new ones. Some of the measures are to collect low cash or to give one extra round to our customer. We have also reduced our price for day break service.”
