Nigeria loses N499.32bn as Twitter ban hits 200 days

The ban on Twitter by the Federal Government has continued to cost the country direly.

The latest information is that the ban has set the country back by N499.32bn since it came into effect on June 4, 2021.

Recall that the Federal Government announced the suspension of Twitter on June 4 after the microblogging site deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The directive was promptly carried out by the telecommunication companies the next day, following a formal instruction from the Nigerian Communications Commission to that effect.

NetBlocks Cost of Shutdown Tool estimates that Nigeria’s economy loses N104.02m ($250,600) every hour to the Twitter ban.

Since the ban on June 4 up to the time the report was done, there had been a total of 4,800 hours (200 days).
