The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community has been thrown into mourning following the death of two undergraduates from the Faculty of Administration of the institution.
According to Inside OAU, a 200 level student of Business administration Department, identified as Emmanuel Adedeji, allegedly drank a poisonous substance and was in the throes of death before fellow students found out what he had done.
He was rushed to the institution’s health centre with an ambulance, but died before they got to the health centre.
A coursemate said: “The Emmanuel guy is a very funny dude who cracks jokes and very lively. Always happy, no one knew he was suffering depression. He was still seen around 9 pm yesterday looking for a pharmacy store. He drank sniper this morning.
Still can’t believe you’re gone, bro.
RIP coursemate!”
The spokesperson of the institution, Abiodun Olarewaju, confirmed the death. He appealed to parents and guidance to instill it in their children or wards that failure is not the end of life.
He said they should let the children know that whatever the challenge or the level of depression, suicide is not an option.
“We want to sympathise with the parent and friends of the deceased. The boy was at his formative age. We heard that the boy left a suicide note. It pains us that the boy is dead. The reason for his action is not yet known,” he said.
The second incident, happened a little later that same yesterday (Tuesday), according to Inside OAU, and it reportedly involved a Part Four student of the Department of Management and Accounting, Faculty of Administration, whose name could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
He was also said to have ingested a harmful substance and was rushed to the health centre. While he made it there, he could not be saved as he gave up the ghost at the health centre.
The two incidents prompted the students to embark on a protest on OAU campus Tuesday morning.
Efforts to obtain official reaction on the second incident did not materialise at the time of filing this report.
