Maiduguri plunged into darkness as Boko Haram blows up power tower again

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum

Maiduguri, Borno State capital has been plunged into darkness again, as Boko Haram blows up another transmission tower.

This came roughly 72 hours after electric power was restored to the city following a similar incident when Boko Haram insurgents blew up a transmission tower feeding the city.

Residents of Maiduguri took to the social media only on Wednesday to celebrate the restoration of power after nearly two months of blackout.

The restoration of power was difficult because of the insecurity challenge in the region.

Three officials of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) were reportedly severely injured by a landmine planted by the insurgents while restoring service.

Another official was said to have lost his life after falling off a tower.

The latest tower brought down is said to be not too far from the one brought down in January.

It was learnt that the insurgents planted bombs on each leg of the tower and detonated them, causing the tower to come down.

Official reactions from the TCN and the Borno State government were still being awaited at the time of filing this report.
