There is no respite yet for the people of Yewa community in Ogun State in spite of constant assurance of protection from the government of the state.
MSN gathered that skirmishes are still happening in the community between herders and indigenes over sundry matters, such as access to water for cattle.
Residents told MSN that access to water is one constant area of clash between indigenes and herders because the wells do not have enough water for residents at this time of the year.
Insistence of cattle herders on fetching water for their cattle from community wells whose water is not even enough for the residents often lead to quarrels and then violence.
One of the community leaders, the CDA Chairman of Oke-Agbede, a village in Imeko-Afon Local Government of Ogun State, Prince Adebisi Peter Obaagbo, said herders often inflict machete cuts on residents over disagreements.
He said a certain Mr Segun Abiodun, 32, was attacked with a machete by herdsmen on his farm at Asudodo village, Imeko-Afon Local Government on Tuesday, 23rd February, 2021, because he wouldn’t allow them to gain access to a well on his farm.
He cited other instances at Idufe village where on Wednesday, 24th February, 2021, two farmers, Mr Adeogun and Mr Asebi were attacked because they did not allow the herdsmen to graze cattle on their farmlands.
He said there were other instances of assault on residents, adding that one of the herdsmen was arrested and was being detained at the Imeko police station.
It was gathered that the frequent clashes has forced many indigenes to relocate to Benin Republic.
The DPO of Imeko, CSP Simon Odidi, confirmed the arrest of one of the suspects. He said the suspect would be charged to court for prosecution soon.
