Governor Ortom calls for probe of rape of girl by four boys in Benue

Suspects' parents shield their children from prosecution

Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has ordered immediate investigation of the case of gang-rape of a teenager by four young men in Obi Local Government Area of the state.

The boys reportedly filmed themselves in the act. The clip is currently circulating on the internet.

Reports indicate that the parents of the suspects have been trying their best to shield their children from prosecution, while the father of the victim was also said to be reluctant to press charges because of stigma.

Terver Akase, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ortom, in a press statement on Tuesday, described the assault on the young girl as barbaric, dehumanizing and unfortunate.

He said the arrest and prosecution of the culprits would serve as deterrent to persons who sexually assault women, especially minors.

Ortom called on the Chairman of Obi Local Government and traditional rulers from the area to collaborate with security agencies to fish out the rape suspects and bring them to justice.
