A Nigerian man has been arrested in Cork, Ireland, in connection with the death of an 84-year-old Nigerian woman.
The woman passed away in the hospital two days after an alleged assault at her home.
The elderly woman was taken to Cork University Hospital by ambulance on Tuesday after feeling unwell following an incident at her residence in Carrigaline on Sunday morning, February 23, 2025. Doctors later discovered she had suffered a severe brain injury, and she was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Reports indicate that the tragic event followed an assault on the woman’s daughter inside the kitchen of their home at Garrydhu Drive. The middle-aged daughter had sought help from a neighbour after the attack and returned to find her elderly mother in a disoriented state. The 84-year-old reportedly told her daughter that she had been pushed and dragged down the stairs, sustaining injuries.
Gardaí were alerted, and a 38-year-old man, who was known to both women, was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he was committed under mental health legislation. He was later discharged and subsequently arrested on Tuesday afternoon. He was taken to Togher Garda station for questioning regarding the alleged assault.
Authorities cordoned off the house for forensic examination, and the State Pathologist’s office has been called in to conduct a postmortem. Sources say the results will be crucial in determining whether the assault directly contributed to the woman’s death.
