Finland’s first openly gay ice hockey player, Janne Puhakka, has been found dead in his home following a suspected shooting.
The 29-year-old was discovered on Sunday evening, October 13, at the apartment he shared with his partner, Rolf Nordmo, 65, in Espoo, Finland.
The police have arrested a 65-year-old man, but they have not officially confirmed the identities of the suspect and victim.
According to lead investigator Matti Högman, authorities believe this was a premeditated act, stating that the suspect and victim were known to each other.
Tributes have poured in for Puhakka, including from former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, who posted a heartfelt tribute with a broken heart emoji on social media.
The Western Uusimaa Police are treating the case as a homicide.
Officers were called to the scene after receiving a report of a violent crime. The suspect, believed to have used a firearm, was arrested without incident.
The investigation continues as police work to determine the motive behind the killing. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
