The price of cooking gas has surged to a record high of N1,500 per kilogram across retail outlets in Nigeria, leaving consumers grappling with the rising cost of living.
As of Sunday, October 14, 2024, the increase was confirmed in several locations, including Ogun, Lagos, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
This sharp rise follows a series of incremental price hikes in recent months, driven by factors such as foreign exchange challenges and increased international gas prices.
Many households and small businesses reliant on cooking gas have expressed concerns over the growing financial strain.
Checks at various retail outlets revealed that in some parts of Ogun and Lagos, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of gas now stands at N17,000.
In Abuja, the situation remains similar, further worsening the affordability of the essential commodity for everyday cooking.
Market experts and stakeholders have urged the government to intervene and stabilize prices, warning that if left unchecked, the situation could worsen the economic pressure on Nigerian families.
