NCC announces completion of NIN-SIM linkage of phone numbers in Nigeria
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially announced the successful completion of the NIN-SIM linkage process across the country.
The process, which was part of the federal government’s policy, required every mobile phone number in Nigeria to be linked to the National Identification Number (NIN).
This initiative was designed to improve national security and enhance the effectiveness of digital services.
According to the NCC, the completion of this exercise means that all phone numbers in Nigeria are now associated with verified identities.
This major milestone is expected to aid in combating identity fraud, cybercrime, and other forms of illegal activities. The NIN-SIM linkage will also streamline government services and improve overall telecommunications infrastructure.
The NCC had previously set several deadlines for the completion of the exercise, the most recent being September 14, 2024.
With this step now finalized, Nigeria joins other nations that have implemented similar identity verification processes to regulate the use of telecommunications for both security and service delivery purposes.
