The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into allegations of bribery and corruption within the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
The move follows recent reports suggesting widespread corruption in the service, including accusations that certain officials have been accepting bribes to provide illegal privileges to inmates.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Tunji-Ojo described the allegations as deeply troubling and reiterated the ministry’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
The minister emphasized that the investigation would be thorough and impartial, with the goal of identifying and punishing any officials found guilty of misconduct.
He assured the public that there would be no tolerance for corruption in any department under his jurisdiction.
The directive comes amid public outcry following purported claims by convicted cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, that he had paid large sums in bribes to NCoS officials to receive be accommodated in an apartment outside the prison to serve his jail term.
These revelations have sparked outrage, with many calling for urgent reforms within the service.
The investigation is expected to deliver its findings in the coming weeks.
