The Nigerian Army has admitted that one of its officers sh0t a young protester in Zaria, Kaduna State on Tuesday, August 6.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Onyema Nwachukwu, said troops of the Nigerian Army on the said day responded to a distress call that some hoodlums gathered in Samaru in large numbers, burning tyres on the road and pelting security personnel with stones.
He said the troops got to the scene and were attacked by the protesters. In the process, he said a soldier fired a warning shot to scare the hoodlums away.
He added that the bullet however led to the death of a 16 year old boy Ismail Mohammed.
He said the soldier involved had been arrested and was undergoing interrogation.
The Army Public Relations Director revealed that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, had sent a high-powered delegation led by the General Officer Commanding 1 Division Maj Gen Lander Saraso to pay a condolence visit to the family of the deceased.
He further disclosed that senior military officers were present at the burial of the late protester.
