MTN snubs NCC, fails to reconnect barred subscribers

SIMs

More than 24 hours after the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) ordered telecom operators to reconnect the subscribers disconnected in connection with SIM-NIN linkage issues, MTN Nigeria is yet to comply with the order.

NCC gave the order on Monday following massive outcry from telecom consumers affected by the mass disconnection.

It would be recalled that thousands of MTN subscribers woke up to find out their SIMs had been barred on Sunday, July 28, 2024.

On Monday, many of the subscribers besieged MTN offices in Lagos, Osun and other locations, trying to get their lines back.

MSN reported that subscribers swarmed around MTN Nigeria’s FESTAC office as early as 6am on Monday.

However, around 12 noon a policeman with the name tag, Gboyega Balogun, told the crowd to disperse and go home because the server had crashed.

He urged them to return the following day (today, Tuesday, July 30, 2024).

Some subscribers got so enraged that they pulled down the fence of the telco with brute force.

Relief later came for the affected subscribers as NCC gave an order for them to be immediately reconnected.

However, checks by Microsecondnews revealed that the order of the regulator had not been carried out as of 11pm on Tuesday.

A sample of the subscribers affected by the disconnection told Microsecondnews that their lines had remained dead.

An MTN subscriber, Toyin Abiola told MSN that her line was yet to be reconnected, even after she had gone online to link her NIN to her SIM.

“I saw information showing a special site MTN created for linkage of NIN to SIM. I went there and successfully linked my NIN. But many hours after, my line remains dead up till now.”

Efforts to reach MTN Nigeria for their comments last night proved abortive.
