Death toll rises to five in Lagos building collapse

A total of five people are now known to have died in the building collapse recorded in Lagos today, Thursday, July 23, 2024.

The house at number 13 Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos State came tumbling down in the early hours of today.

Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) were able to rescue five people.

Eyewitnesses said a set of three terraces under construction suddenly came down in the middle of the night.

According to Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA Permanent Secretary, search and rescue operations were swift.

He said three adult males were initially recovered dead, while two male adults were rescued alive. An adult male trapped under the rubble was rescued alive later by LASEMA officials and the Lagos State Fire Service, he said.

All the victims were site workers. They are said to be receiving medical attention. SEHMU was contacted for the remains of the three fatalities.
