Two men, Fidelis Francis and Lukman Jimoh have been arrested for burgling a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Sagamu, Ogun State.
They were not caught at the scene of the crime but the CCTV confirmed they were the armed robbers who scaled the fence of the church and used iron bars to break into the building.
They fled into the adjoining bush when someone caught sight of them and raised alarm, alerting local vigilante men. The police were also alerted.
The police team led by the DPO Sagamu Division, CSP Okiki Agunbiade, arrived and checked the precincts of the church to no avail. They however noticed a Lexus saloon car with number plate KJA 469 EP parked not too far from the crime scene and decided to mount surveillance on the car.
The suspects, who had stayed in the bush for about 5 hours thought the coast was clear and came back for their car and were promptly arrested by men of the state police command who took them back to the crime scene.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the men claimed ignorance of the crime until they were shown footage from the CCTV system in the church which captured all their activities.
“Having seen the video evidence, the two suspects were left with no alternative but to confess to the crime,” Oyeyemi said.
He said the incident happened on Monday around 2 am at GRA, Sagamu, Ogun State.
The PPRO added that while Francis, 28, is a resident of Udem in Cross River State, Jimoh, 40, resides in Akure, Ondo State.
He disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, commended the display of professionalism by his men and directed an in- depth investigation into the case with a view to charging the suspects as soon as possible.
