Former Nigerian striker, Jonathan Akpoborie has insisted that Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen deserves to be crowned the African Footballer of the Year Award.
The 24-year-old, who led Napoli to its first Serie A title in 33 years last week, continued his heroics against Fiorentina at the Diego Maradona Stadium where his club celebrated being crowned champions.
Osimhen scored the landmark goal in the 74th minute from the penalty spot for his 47th goal in the Italian league, in 79 appearances; a record he took from George Weah who held the record with 46 goals in 114 Serie A games. He is also the highest Serie A league goalscorer and is being courted by Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
Akpoborie says he feels the Nigerian international has no serious competition that will deny him from bagging the Africa Footballer of the Year Award.
“Osimhen is our pride and I am happy with his incredible goal scoring records this season with Napoli,” he told CompleteSportsNigeria.
“Breaking Weah’s record is not an easy feat and I believe his general performance this season will help him to claim the African Ballon d’Or.
“There is no player in Africa that can match his record and that alone should propel him to win the award.”
