Bus conveying newly-weds plunges into river, killing groom in Ondo

The ill-fated bus

A man who came to Ikoyi Registry in Lagos to marry his heart-throb has died on his way back to Akure when the bus he and his wife were travelling in plunged into the Owena River on Sunday afternoon.

The man, identified simply as Adewale, died alongside four other passengers of the 18-seater bus at Aponmu village, Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State.

His wife sustained severe injuries and is currently hospitalised.

It was learnt that the couple were to conduct their traditional wedding next weekend.

The actual circumstances of the accident were not clear, other than the fact that it was raining heavily at the time.

There were speculations that the driver of the bus, marked Lagos AAA 859 XC might have been over-speeding and lost control at the time of the accident.

The bus reportedly hit a rock in the river, the impact of which killed the driver and four others, including the groom.

Witnesses said the rain prevented help from getting to the trapped passengers for over an hour.

Rescued victims of the accident,  including a five-year-old, were rushed to the hospital.

Spokesman for the Ondo FRSC, Mr. Abiola Fadumo, confirmed the accident, but said it was yet uncertain how many people were dead as rescue operation was still ongoing at the time.
